Class A Surfacing Tools for Rhino


What are Class A Surfaces?

The term Class A generally refers to a specific modelling workflow prevalent in automotive and product design called 'Patch Modelling' in which complex body shapes are produced from a number of continuity matched single span
surfaces.

Technically, a single span (Bezier) curve or surface is smoother than a multi span NURBS curve or surface. The single span workflow does however require surfaces with higher degrees than is usually the case in general purpose NURBS modelling.

Whilst Rhino has the ability to create these high degree single span surfaces, most of the surface creation tools in Rhino produce a surface by interpolation. This process means that control points are not specified explicitly and multi span surfaces are usually the outcome.

VSR Shape Modeling 1.0 allows these single span surfaces with explicit geometry to be created and matched easily, bringing a workflow to Rhino that until now was the preserve of high end specialist applications.

The dialog and handle-based functions in VSR Shape Modeling 1.0 give the user a new level of efficiency. A wide range of commands allow the surfaces to be analysed and modified during the creation process.

The VSR Shape Analysis 2.0 plug-in is included in VSR Shape Modeling and provides dynamic associatively with all geometry creation and modification functions.

Together with the VSR Realtime Renderer 3.0, Virtual Shape Research is now offering a full line of advanced tools for the creation, analysis and visualisation of high-quality surfaces in Rhino.
